Period Poverty

What is Period poverty?

Period poverty can be defined as the lack of access to safe and hygienic menstrual products, but it is more than just that. It is a barrier to health, education, and equality. For countless young women, not having the basic supplies to manage their periods safely and hygienically means facing shame, isolation, and missed opportunities.

Imagine being forced to skip school every month, not because you’re sick, but because you don’t have something as simple as a pad. Many girls fall behind in their studies or even drop out entirely. Beyond the physical struggles, the stigma surrounding menstruation can leave them feeling alone and excluded.

Shocking Statistics in
Sri Lanka

  • Menstruating Population in Sri Lanka: Approximately 4.2 million women and girls

  • Access: Research indicates that 60-70% of this population lacks access to affordable feminine hygiene products

  • Cost: The average price of a pack of pads is 350 LKR ($1.20), unaffordable for many whose daily income is less than 1,135 LKR ($3.86).

  • Education Impact: The recent economic crisis in Sri Lanka has heightened period poverty, leading to more girls missing school during their period due to financial constraints. In fact, 60% of Sri Lankan parents do not send their daughters to school during menstruation.
